Abstract
The 19 July 2024 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice in the case of “Legal Consequences of Israel’s Policies and Practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Including East Jerusalem” reflects the efforts of the international legal community to put an end to the wrongful policies and practices that Israel has taken in the Occupied Palestinian Territories for decades. In this case, while examining various aspects of the questions raised by the United Nations General Assembly, the Court took up another lasting precedent on various issues of international law, including the status of the right to self-determination, the concept of occupation, and the consequences of prolonged occupation. Even in some passages of the Court’s decision, there have been references to Israel’s violation of the rule prohibiting apartheid which is considered one of the important contributions of the Court. Along the same lines, various other issues have been raised in this Advisory Opinion through the raising of general questions by the Assembly, each of which requires a separate examination. In this article, we will review the most important findings and contributions of the Court in the Palestine Advisory Opinion 2024.
